What Does the Different Buddha Poses Mean?

Learn what the different poses of the Buddha mean.

Have you ever wondered why the Buddha may be lying down in one statue, but standing in another?  Do they actually mean anything?  Well yes they do!

Statues of the Buddha are often shown in three general positions

  1. Standing
  2. Sitting
  3. Lying Down

But why?  Here’s what they mean:

  1. Standing:  Symbolizes his active nature where he was teaching the Dharma
  2. Sitting:  Symbolizes meditative concentration (and peace)
  3. Lying Down:  Also known as his “reclining” position, symbolizes Nirvana

The Buddha appears standing to symbolize him teaching, sitting to symbolize meditative concentration, and lying down to symbolize nirvana.
